WHY ARE WE NEEDED?

Every spring when the baby chicks are being sold at all the feed stores, a certain percentage of them will grow to be an unwanted rooster. Some of these, like our own, are embraced and loved.  Unfortunately, because of personal decisions or municipal rules, these beautiful loving roosters are cast out into the wild, or for some, posted on flyers for those that can take them. Cast into the wild is almost a certain death sentence at the hands and fangs of multiple wild and domestic predators.

WHAT DO WE DO?

We strive to build accommodations, provide food, care and love for as many of these birds as we are safely able to.

The housing and caring for these castoffs, is time consuming and resource consuming.  Most roosters come to us without any maintenance money, it’s up to us to build shelters and provide feed for our residents.  Most health care is administered by one of the principles, and veterinary care is utilized for any of the more serious illnesses or injuries.

We are fully aware, that to maintain our principles and the FIVE FREEDOMS, some of our loved ones will not make it and must be put down.  Obviously, this is not a choice that we take lightly or easily, but one that must at times be done.  All of those that die are buried on site in our own memory plot.

Aside from housing and caring for abandoned roosters, we maintain a flock of happy hens.  The eggs produced by these hens are sold to generate maintenance funds, fed back to the birds as extra nutrients and donated to the local food bank.  Sometimes, Wolfe Ridge Farm is the sole source of eggs for the San Lorenzo Valley food bank recipients.
